Where are California’s strongest schools?

This map plots every scored California public school — 5,230 elementary, 1,714 middle, and 1,739 high schools (8,683 total) — each pill colored by its Scope Score. Statewide, elementary schools average a Scope Score of 44, with 21.6% of students exceeding the standard versus 42.9% meeting or exceeding it — the split most rating sites never show.

How does SchoolScope score the schools on this map?

Every pill is a Scope Score (0–100): a weighted composite of CAASPP results — the exceeded-vs-met split, growth trajectory, chronic absenteeism, and suspension rate — computed within each school’s level, so elementary schools are never ranked against high schools. Blue means Strong (75th percentile or higher); orange means Needs Support (below the 25th). How we score →
